From Historically Used Plants to Novel Peptides for the Treatment of Type-2 Diabetes and Alzheimer's Disease

This keynote presentation will examine the therapeutic potential of medicinal plants, plant-derived bioactive compounds, and novel peptide therapies for managing Type-2 Diabetes and Alzheimer's disease. Professor Tytgat will discuss phytochemicals such as curcumin, ginsenosides, EGCG, cinnamon compounds, and walnut-derived peptides, alongside emerging peptide therapeutics including GLP-1 receptor agonists and other innovative drug candidates.

The session will also highlight the growing scientific evidence connecting diabetes with neurodegenerative disorders and explore how translational research is accelerating the development of safer, more effective natural product-based therapeutics.

About Professor Jan Tytgat

Professor Jan Tytgat serves as Full Professor and Head of Toxicology & Pharmacology at KU Leuven, Belgium. After completing his Master's degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences and PhD in Physiology, he undertook postdoctoral training at Harvard Medical School.

With over 380 scientific publications, several books, an international patent, and numerous scientific awards, including the International Redi Award (2024), Professor Tytgat continues to make significant contributions to pharmacology, toxinology, peptide drug discovery, and biomedical research.

Dr. Semwal's research explores traditional healing systems used by rural communities in Uttarakhand, documenting indigenous knowledge related to mental health treatment and well-being.

The study investigates traditional herbal medicines, fumigation therapies, ritual practices, dietary modifications, and community-based healing approaches used for anxiety, depression, epilepsy, sleep disturbances, and other mental health concerns. The findings reveal the continued importance of traditional healthcare systems and highlight opportunities for future scientific validation and integrative healthcare research.

This keynote presentation will also emphasize the value of preserving oral traditions and local healing practices before they are lost to modernization. About Dr. Deepak Kumar Semwal

Dr. Semwal is an internationally recognized researcher in phytochemistry, phytomedicine, ethnopharmacology, and natural product research. He has served as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in South Africa and India, led multiple funded research projects, published over 120 scientific papers, authored 12 books, and holds several patents.

His research interests include natural product chemistry, clinical pharmacology, drug discovery, Ayurveda, medicinal plants, and ethnopharmacology. Through his academic and research contributions, Dr. Semwal continues to advance the scientific understanding of plant-based therapeutics and traditional healing systems.

He is widely respected for his commitment to interdisciplinary research and for promoting evidence-based approaches to natural product discovery. His expertise makes him an important voice in discussions on the future of botanical medicine and integrative health.
