Professor Afzal Hussain Featured at NP Discovery 2027

Apigenin-Mediated MARK4 Inhibition and Alzheimer's Disease Research

Professor Afzal Hussain, Professor of Pharmacognosy at King Saud University, Saudi Arabia, will present his research at NP Discovery 2027 – International Congress on Natural Products, Botanicals & Herbal Drug Discovery.

🔬 Presentation Title

Apigenin-mediated MARK4 inhibition: A novel approach in advancing Alzheimer's disease therapeutics

Apigenin is a naturally occurring flavonoid widely distributed in fruits, vegetables, and medicinal plants. Its biological properties, including reported neuroprotective activity, have generated interest in its potential applications in neurodegenerative disease research.

Professor Hussain's work examines Microtubule Affinity-Regulating Kinase 4 (MARK4) as a possible molecular target of apigenin. The study combines molecular modeling, biochemical evaluation, and fluorescence-based binding studies to investigate apigenin–MARK4 interactions.

The research reports inhibitory activity of apigenin against purified recombinant MARK4, with an IC₅₀ of 2.39 μM. The findings provide a basis for further investigation into the role of apigenin–MARK4 signaling in Alzheimer's disease and other disorders associated with kinase dysregulation.

👨‍🔬 Meet Professor Afzal Hussain

Professor Afzal Hussain is a Professor of Pharmacognosy at the College of Pharmacy, King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

His research interests include:

Natural Products | Medicinal Plants | Bioactive Compounds | Pharmacognosy | Drug Delivery | Therapeutic Molecules

He holds a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, and is a Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry. With more than 15 years of academic and research experience, he has authored 220+ scientific publications, with 7,000+ citations and an h-index of 49.
