Director
University of British Columbia, Canada

Dr. Horacio Bach specializes in nanomedicine, antibody engineering, virulence factors of pathogenic Mycobacteria, and molecular microbiology. He is currently the Director of the Antibody Engineering and Proteomics Facility at the Immunology and Infection Research Center at the Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute.

Dr. Bach holds a PhD in Molecular Microbiology and Biotechnology from Tel Aviv University and has completed postdoctoral research at the University of Minnesota and the University of British Columbia.

🔬 Presentation Title

“Niosomes Encapsulated with Natural Products for Cancer Therapy”

Dr. Bach's presentation will explore the use of niosomes as nanocarrier systems for natural products in cancer therapy.

Natural products have significant potential in drug discovery, but challenges such as poor aqueous solubility, chemical instability, and low bioavailability can limit their therapeutic applications.

Niosomes, which are self-assembled non-ionic surfactant vesicles, can provide a delivery platform designed to help overcome these challenges.

The research examines a niosomal delivery system using Tween 60, Span 60, and cholesterol, with extracts from Kalanchoe fedtschenkoi (Crassulaceae) used for encapsulation. The niosomes were also decorated with an antibody against Ewing’s sarcoma.

The study evaluated physicochemical characteristics and in-vitro performance. According to the presented research, the formulation demonstrated suitable size characteristics, a polydispersity index below 30%, and an appropriate zeta potential. In-vitro studies showed enhanced cellular uptake and increased cytotoxic activity compared with the non-encapsulated counterpart.

The work highlights the potential of niosomes as a scalable and biocompatible platform for improving the delivery and therapeutic efficacy of natural products.
